Artists in Residence
The Artist in Residence (AIR) program at Marc’s Madness is currently awarding fully sponsored residencies to five local artists. Current residencies include studio space. AIRs become part of a dynamic community of artists participating in Vancouver’s other community programs, allowing for exchange and collaborative relationships to develop within the artist community in the lower mainland. Artists selected for this program are at all stages in their careers and can work in all media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and nonfiction writing, poetry, dance, music, interdisciplinary, and social practice.
Program Goals
-
To support and invest in individuals at the cutting edge of their fields, whose work will impact the cultural landscape at large. To provide these artists with the support and opportunity to take their work to the next level and to explore and experiment
-
To eventually connect artists and thinkers into a dynamic community of local, national, and international artists: a professional network of creative practitioners and thinkers
-
To encourage artists to explore their ideas and work within the context of North Vancouver and in the larger context of the lower mainland
-
To bring an international community of artists to the North Shore and create opportunities for engagement and cross-cultural exchange with local artists and audiences
Marc’s Madness current roster of AIR:
Marc Berezowski, Virginia Duivenvoorden, Chalk Dancers
MARC BEREZOWSKI’s passion with dance and with all the arts, in addition to his interest in education, has been a constant for 30 years, having been a dancer in several companies and a partner in outreach activities with, among others, Liz Lerman, Simon Fraser University, Arizona State University and the Arizona Commission for the Arts. He received his BFA from Simon Fraser University and his MFA from Arizona State University, which led to a three-year visiting assistant professor position in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Performance Department at Arizona State University West. Lately, his interest in dance and education has led him to be enrolled in the Arts Education PhD program at Simon Fraser University. Education at this advanced level has given Berezowski additional dance performance theory knowledge as it applies in context to Dance Education and Dance in Education. His research orbits around the culture of teaching dance and dance subjects from a post-formal lens. He has enjoyed teaching the EDUC 330 pedagogy class the last six years at Simon Fraser University, which was specifically developed to nurture and give confidence and competence to teachers and teachers in training when they teach the dance stream curriculum in the Public school system.

Virginia Duivenvoorden has performed from coast to coast and in Europe. She is an alumni member of the Karen Jamieson Dance Company and was guest artist with the Dancers of Damelahamid. She attended Arts Umbrella, SFU and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the European Dance Development Centre part of the ArtEz University of the Arts in Arnhem, The Netherlands. In Arnhem, her process developed and gained momentum amongst an international community of dancers, artists and master teachers. Virginia's journey has been enriched through sharing it with husband Frank and their two children.
Virginia invites participants, collaborators and audience to discover the passion in all of us to apply our signature style in creative, collaborative and fun projects that celebrate and connect communities. Virginia’s interdisciplinary approach has been forged in the heat of managing multiple projects from start to finish. She gratefully had the opportunity to work with Dr Tod Pelly helping patients with chiropractic care and education. She was also trained as a laser therapist. Her creative muscle was really stretched while working for Marimekko Design House in Vancouver. Singing at Valley Church deepened her musical and spiritual journey. Sewing, lettering, design, prayer, paper, writing and fabric are all aspects of her practice that weave through the dance. Virginia enjoys teaching and inviting her students to co create with artistic work that is dynamic, creative and adaptable to a variety of settings. The design of each class is generating the results of her broad body of knowledge regarding physical conditioning, body awareness and tension relief. Some of the recurrent themes in her work include transformation, contrasts, conflict resolution, resurrection and universal love.

Lauren Yeung:
Lauren Yeung was born in Vancouver, Canada where she began her dance
training. She studied with the Arts Umbrella Dance Company for 4 years under the
guidance of Artemis Gordon and Lynn Sheppard. While there, she had the
opportunity to work with such renowned choreographers as James Kudelka,
Thomas Klein, Fernando Magadan and Lesley Telford. She then toured with the
Arts Umbrella Dance Company to Europe and performed an excerpt of Crystal
Pite's “Dark Matters" set by Cindy Salgado. Upon graduating, she travelled back to
Europe to be a part of the Dance in Art Junior Company. It was here that she
discovered her own voice as an emerging artist and choreographer. After one year
of dancing with the company she was offered a teaching position and a chance to
choreograph for the next two season's of Dance in Art. Throughout this time she
also received work in a music video (Her Name is Murder Productions) as well as
being part of an art installation piece by JappeMo Reintjes. Concluding her time in
the Netherlands, Lauren is excited to be back in Vancouver to begin a new chapter
with fellow artist Shannon Mary May

Shannon May:Shannon May is a Canadian professional dance artist from the small town of
Fort St. John in northern British Columbia. She began dancing at four years old
and continued dancing under the tutelage of Shauna Milne until the age of 18.
Upon graduating high school Shannon moved to Vancouver where she completed
the Arts Umbrella graduate program. Immediately after this she attended
Spellbound’s contemporary intensive in Rome and then moved to Calgary to train
for a year with the Decidely Jazz Danceworks company. After this she moved to
the Netherlands to work with the Dance in Art Junior Company under the direction
of Martine van Santen and Rianne Keyzer. In 2016 Shannon joined Mystic Ballet,
a contemporary dance company in Connecticut and has danced and performed for
the company for the past two years.
-
Some highlights of Shannon’s career include performing Rianne Keyzer’s
Well Tempered in Haarlem, NL, performing as Ursula in Mystic Ballet’s
contemporary take on The Little Mermaid and performing as a soloist in Mystic
Ballet’s performances of Grab and Splash. She has had the privilege of working
with many talented choreographers such as Gioconda Barbuto, Walter Matteini,
Fernando Magadan, Dario Dinuzzi, Lesley Telford, Christophe Dozzi and
Francesca Caroti.
Over the years Shannon has had opportunities to develop her own style and
choreography. She was encouraged to create her own movement at Dance in Art
and, during her time with Mystic Ballet, she choreographed two pieces on the
company for their end of season performances.
Shannon is moving to Vancouver and looks forward to immersing herself
once again in the Canadian dance community. She hopes to continue to create her
own work and collaborate with other dance artists. Shannon is excited to bring
back all that she’s learned to her home province and believes she and fellow artist
Lauren Yeung can present something new and interesting to the Vancouver dance
scene.
